Traditional Ruler Begs FG To Construct Uzo Uwani–Anambra Road To Boost Agriculture

The traditional ruler of Akiyi-Umulokpa community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Vincent Ekwedigwe, Friday, appealed to the federal government to construct Akiyi Umulopka-Omo road, which links the local government to Anambra State, to boost the economic activities in the area, as well as reduce the hardship people plying the route face.

Speaking with THE WHISTLER in Umulokpa, Igwe Ekwedigwe, a civil engineer, said the road would also boost rice production in the area as ‘it traverses rice fields’. According to him, “This stretch of road, from Akiyi-Umulokpa to Omo in Anambra State, is about 15 kilometres. The road passes through rice fields. With it, our journey from Uzo-Uwani to Onitsha consumes hours. But if that road is done, it takes less than 45 minutes. It will also promote agriculture because it passes through a very fertile land.”

He also commended Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for embarking on the construction of some strategic roads in the local government, which he said, was a landmark project.

He said, “Uzo-Uwani LGA has had a very great aspiration that one day, the road leading from Nkpologwu to the headquarters at Umulokpa, a stretch of about 39 kilometres, which had remained impassable for decades, would one day be done. We thank Gov Ugwuanyi immensely for, in conjunction with the World Bank assistance, seeing that that road is fully constructed with asphalt overlays and drainages on both sides. This means that whenever that road is completed, it would last for many years. It is the road that connects Uzo-Uwani to Nsukka. At the same time, he has embarked on another long route, through Ugbene Ajima. It is another long stretch, and almost 75% completed.”
