U.K. Meteorological Office Predicts Next Five Years Would Be Hottest Globally

United Kingdom (U.K.) Meteorological Office (Met Office) has warned that the world would have another record-breaking global temperature within the next half decade.

The U.K. national weather service in its prediction said global temperatures for the years from 2020–2024 will rise around 1.91–2.92°F (1.06–1.62°C) above pre-industrial levels.

The body explained that the rise implies that the current record for the hottest year which was set in 2016, at 2.09°F (1.16°C) of warming will be surpassed.

The U.K. weather service said the five-year period from 2020 – 2024 will be the hottest half-decade on record globally, as they predicted the temperature to be between 2.07–2.63°F (1.15–1.46°C).

The body said the cause of the raise is as a result of rising continued high levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere warming the planet.

The Met Office forecast, which is based on computer models, also estimates that there is less than a one-in-10 chance that any of the next five years will breach the key threshold of 2.7°F (1.5°C) above pre-industrial levels.

The United Nations (UN) climate science body had warned of the impending dangers of allowing global warming of more than 2.7°F (1.5°C) which led to the signing of the Paris Agreement, aimed at combating climate change.

Meanwhile the Australian fire has recently been linked to the rise in global temperature as Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climate scientist at University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney said: “global warming is making the country even hotter and drier.”
