UNIABUJA: Police Confirm Abduction Of Six By Gunmen

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has confirmed that the staff quarters of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) was invaded by armed men on Tuesday.

The command confirmed the report via a statement signed by its spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh.

The police said the assailants stormed the staff quarters located in the GIRI area of the FCT in the early hours of Tuesday, adding that “preliminary investigation revealed that six persons were allegedly abducted into the forest.”

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, ordered the deployment of “tactical and conventional policing resources” to the UNIABUJA main and satellite campuses as well as the staff quarters and other areas in the university community.

Earlier reports had said that the assailants kidnapped two professors, two senior lecturers and two children.

They victims were identified as Professor Obanza, Malam Sambo Mohammed, Dr Tobit and Professor Bassey Ubom as well as his son and daughter.

In a circular he earlier issued, the University’s Vice Chancellor, Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, mandated “all staff and students [to] wear their official Uniabuja ID cards when entering any of our campuses including the Giri Quarters”.

He said, “The safety unit has my instruction to turn anyone back who cannot explain their mission on our campus, quarters or any UniAbuja branches even if they claim to be staff or students, only University ID card worn on them is a guarantee for entry.”
