UNIDROIT: U.S. Representative Lauds Out-going Malami For ‘Remarkable Achievement’

A representative of the United States of America, Sam Rothenberg, has praised Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, for his leadership and “remarkable achievements” as 2020 Chairman of the Rome-based International Institute for the Unification of Private Law(UNIDROIT).

According to a statement by Malami’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Rothenberg was quoted as saying that Malami “contributed in the development of the goals of the Institute” while chairing the Institute in 2020.

UNIDROIT is an intergovernmental organization that harmonizes international private law across countries for the corporate development of member states.

Malami while delivering his valedictory address at a virtual meeting of the Institute’s 79th Session, stressed that he implemented “substantive projects and institutional improvements despite COVID-19 pandemic situation.”

As for Nigeria, the AGF assured members that “the Federal Government of Nigeria pledges to continue the process of ensuring that Cape Town Convention on matters specific to Mining, Agricultural and Construction (MAC) Equipment Protocol is duly ratified.”

Among other things, he disclosed that progress has been made ” in the implementation of the 2019 adopted Protocol to the Cape Town Convention on matters specific to Mining, Agricultural and Construction (MAC) Equipment” adding that a “Preparatory Commission has been established to select a Registrar to operate the MAC Protocol International Registry and work towards the establishment of a Supervisory Authority. “

On his part, the newly elected Chair of the UNIDROIT Mr. J. Hidalgo (Mexico) ” thanked and appreciated Malami for the remarkable achievements recorded during his tenure,” the statement partly read on Friday.
