The Ugandan police had arrested the singers for allegedly flouting the country’s COVID-19 protocol by performing at a crowded music concert.

Omah Lay lamented that the Ugandan police treated him like “a common thief” even though organizers of the show had informed him that all necessary clearance were secured before the concert held.

He said he performed to fans under the “full glance and protection of the Ugandan police”, hence was surprised when the police turned back to arrest him and Tems after the event.

He wrote: “The past few days have been some of the toughest of my life that I wouldn’t wish them on anyone. Out in a new country with some beautiful people, the next thing I’m being treated like a common thief.”

On her part, Tems thanked her family and fans as well as the Nigerian and Ugandan Government for working towards their release.

The singer added that the experience opened her eyes to the strife and hurt women go through in Africa.

Recall that the #FreeTemsAndOmahLay hashtag had trended at number one spot on Twitter on Tuesday as Nigerians, including celebrities and politicians, demanded the release of the singers from detention.

The duo was arrested by the Ugandan police after performing at a sold-out concert tagged “The Brunch” in the East African country.

But following the intervention of the Nigerian Government, the charges against the singers were dropped on Tuesday afternoon.
