Universities Should Admit Candidates Based On Merit – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has admonished tertiary institutions across Nigeria to stick to the rules of admitting candidates on the basis of fairness, equity and transparency.

The Registrar of JAMB, Is-haq Oloyede made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State (UNN);  as contained in JAMB’s weekly bulletin (12-19, January, 2020).

Oloyede charged the management of UNN on the need to adhere strictly to the extant guidelines governing the conduct of admission in the country.

Furthermore, he urged the institutions to maximize the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), which has been designed to automate the conduct of admissions into tertiary institutions in the country.

CAPS ensures that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points.

He warned academic institutions from giving admissions without due process, stressing that “the board would not honor any admission done outside the purview of CAPS” and that such behaviors threatens quality education in the country.

“As long as the right thing is done, the Board would continue to partner institutions in the country in order to reposition the education sector to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” he stated.

 “In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, commended the Registrar for the various initiatives brought to bear in the Board particularly as pertains to CAPS and promised not to indulge in any unwholesome practices that could thwart the idea behind it,” the bulletin stated.

Recall that THE WHISTLER reported that JAMB ordered the management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) to offer a female candidate from Niger state, Thomas Goodness Shekwobyalo, admission to study Medicine after scoring 309 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and 274 in Post-UTME.
