‘Unknown Gunmen’: Senior Advocates Ask Jonathan, Abdulsalam To Intervene In South-East’s Insecurity

Following wanton destruction of lives and property in the South-East , some Senior Advocates of Nigeria under the aegis of ‘Concerned South-east SANs’ have called on former president Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar and other well meaning Nigerians to lead mediation efforts to restore peace in the region for the greater good of the country.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Chief Udechukwu Nnoruka Udechukwu SAN on behalf of the body.

Recall that Jonathan is respected globally for his peace advocacy and mediation efforts particularly in Mali, which has seen a military coup oust its democratic leadership thereby throwing the country into socio-economic instability.

Udechukwu held that the mayhem going on in the South-east was getting out of hand and that the likes of Jonathan, Tunde Bakare could deploy their experience to address the situation.

The statement also condemned all acts of violence in the zone, adding that it does not reflect the good and enterprising people of the South-east.

“The Concerned Southeast SANs commiserate with the families of law enforcement officers, other public servants and private individuals who have lost their loved ones as a result of the recent carnage.

“In this regard, the Concerned Southeast SANs respectfully request His Excellency General Abdulsalam Abubakar GCFR, His Excellency Dr. Ebele Goodluck Jonathan GCFR, His Excellency Chief Emeka Anyaoku CFR, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Colonel Dangiwa Umar (Rtd) jointly with other well-meaning Nigerians from the six geo political zones to intervene quickly in the matter with a view to securing a truce which would provide a conducive atmosphere for resolving the underlying issues which are currently threatening the survival of our dear nation,” the statement partly read.

The SANs described the recent killings, alleged double standards of security operatives as well as the destruction of private and public properties by “unknown persons” as deeply regretful.

They pleaded with the federal government to embrace dialogue and diplomacy in addressing the tensions in the south-east.

President Muhammadu Buhari, while citing the experience of the Nigerian-Civil war, had made it clear that the administration would treat those destabilizing the region in the “language they understand”.
