We Make More Sales Now, Burukutu Dealer Speaks On High Cost Of Beer

As prices of alcoholic beverages continue to soar, a burukutu dealer in Enugu says his business is flourishing optimally.

The young man, identified as Charles Agala, said many people “can no longer afford to buy their choice beer drinks and palm wine because of rising inflation.”

According to him, “Our own has remained relatively constant. It used to be N250 a cup. It is not N350. If you compare this to prices of bottles of beer which have doubled, you can then realise why my shop doesn’t lack customers. The cost of palm wine has also tripled. Buruku is nourishing. For some, it serves as food. It has no side effect. The increase in the price is because of transportation and the high cost of the grains. Otherwise, it would have been steady.”

He, however, said the drinking of sachet hard drinks had not reduced, adding that, “Many people are unaware of that. I think the ban is on their manufacturers, but any product already in the market are not disturbed. I sell them, and the demand is steady. Some people mix them with burukutu to get maximum satisfaction.”

A young man was spotted buying burukutu at the shop. He said, “My Dad sent me. He keeps it in his fridge, and drinks it when he wants to relax. The current economic situation must have contributed to it because I know he likes drinking expensive dry gin and whisky.”

A man in his late 70s was heard saying that, “This government has dealt with us. They should not allow us to cause a revolution. It will be terrible.”

Recall that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control recently banned the production and consumption of small packed hard drinks due to abuses.
