Why I Announced Nigerian-born Adeyemo, Others, Into U.S. Economic Team – Biden

Today, Monday, the United States President-elect Joe Biden announced Nigerian-born Wally Adeyemo (Deputy Secretary of the Treasury) and others as key members of his Economic Team, adding they will “build our economy back better — and ensure that every single American is in on the deal”.

Describing Adeyemo’s competence for the job, the Biden-Harris transition website stressed that Wally was selected because of his vast experience in economic and financial issues.

“Wally Adeyemo, a veteran of the Executive Branch and expert on macro-economic policy and consumer protection with deep national security experience, is nominated to serve as Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, having previously served as Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, Deputy National Security Advisor, and the first Chief of Staff of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If confirmed, Adeyemo would be the first African American Deputy Secretary of the Treasury,” it stated.

On his part, Biden stated that he trusted the economic team to deliver on his economic vision for the country.

“This team is comprised of respected and tested groundbreaking public servants who will help the communities hardest hit by COVID-19 and address the structural inequities in our economy,” he added.

In support of Biden, Senator Kamala Harris, observed that the team would work as one to realize the plan of a Biden presidency.

“They share a fundamental commitment to ending this economic crisis and putting people back to work, while rebuilding our economy in a way that lifts up all Americans,” she said.

Other members of Biden’s economic team includes, Janet Yellen, Secretary of the Treasury; Neera Tanden, Director of the Office of Management and Budget; Cecilia Rouse, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers; and Jared Bernstein and Heather Boushey, members of the Council of Economic Advisers.
