Yusuf Launches Anti-Drug Task Force In Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the establishment of a Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as part of efforts to tackle rising cases of substance abuse and drug-related crimes across the state.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the task force will be chaired by the immediate past Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado.

The committee comprises representatives of key security agencies and institutions, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Kano State Hisbah Board, Kano Emirate Council, the Council of Ulama, the Ministry of Health, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.

The state government said the task force was created to provide a coordinated multi-agency response aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks, strengthening enforcement measures, accelerating prosecution of offenders, and reducing drug demand through public awareness campaigns.

Under its mandate, the committee is expected to improve intelligence gathering and information sharing among relevant agencies, identify and dismantle drug trafficking networks, establish secure communication channels for intelligence operations, and encourage community participation through confidential reporting systems.

The task force will also identify major drug distribution centres across the state, coordinate targeted raids and arrests, and recommend measures for the seizure of assets linked to illicit drug activities.

In addition, members are expected to develop strategies for the speedy prosecution of suspects through enhanced evidence gathering, standardised forensic procedures, and collaboration with the judiciary, including proposals for fast-track courts to handle drug-related offences.

On prevention and advocacy, the committee will spearhead awareness campaigns targeting youths, students, and vulnerable groups, while working with religious leaders, traditional institutions, and community stakeholders to promote rehabilitation and support services for persons affected by substance abuse.

Governor Yusuf described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats confronting young people and reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing the challenge through enforcement, prevention, and community involvement.
