7,000 Lose Their Jobs As Looters Wreck Shoprite, Other Businesses In Ilorin

Thousands of workers are estimated to have lost their jobs to the recent raid on the Palms Mall on Fate road, Ilorin, which houses Shoprite and other businesses in Kwara State. The mall was among government and private businesses that were looted by hoodlums in the wake of the recent wave of attacks on warehouses and shops in parts of the country.

A government source told THE WHISTLER on Monday that an estimated 7,000 people working at the mall would be out of job due to the attack.

This website gathered that furniture, iPhone 11 phones and refrigerators were among the million-naira worth of goods looted from the mall by the suspected hoodlums.

The government source told THE WHISTLER that a lady who recently returned to the country from the United Kingdom, had lost over N50 million worth of investment to the looting incident.

The lady, whose name was withheld, had recently set up her store at the popular mall after returning to settle down in the country.

The suspected hoodlums were said to have also carted away Aluminium roofing sheets, mattresses, bags of cement, bags of flour, amongst others, during attacks on the Kwara Agro Hall and other businesses in the state.

To cushion the effect of the looting spree on the businesses and their employees, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had on Sunday announced a N500 million fund accessible by the affected businesses.

“We are therefore not going to leave the business owners like that. We are setting up a N500 million fund for those that were affected, to access.

“The application form is live and active on the state government’s website and can now be filled by interested parties. We are going to get them back on their feet as soon as possible,” AbdulRazaq had said.
