Abam Women Protest Serial Assault On Community, Urges Abia Government Intervention

About 300 women from Ozu Abam community in Arochukwu Local Government have embarked on a peaceful protest to the Abia State Government House and the State House of Assembly, over alleged serial assault on them by people from the neighboring community of Ndi Okorie Abam.

The women claimed the attack led to the death of their son, one Chinedu, who was allegedly murdered by attackers from Ndi Okorie Abam while he was harvesting his farm produce.

They also alleged destruction of their farm lands.

The women said that some Ozu Abam indigenes were kidnapped, while some of those who escape the attacks were hospitalized at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia.

Mrs Uche Egbuta, leader of the protesting women, alleged that their community was under constant attack by people from Ndi Okorie Abam who ambush and attack them using dangerous weapons.

She requested the quick intervention of the Abia State Government, saying that they did not need to resort to retaliation, hence they set out on the peaceful protest.

She said the dispute over land had claimed numerous lives of Ozu Abam residents in the past.

Abia State Government while responding through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Keneth Kalu, said that it would take every necessary step to bring the land dispute to an end.

However, the member representing Arochukwu constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Uchenna Okoro, said he had made several efforts to bring a lasting peace to the crises and appealed for calm in the areas.
