Abia Govt Warns Teachers Against Absenteeism, Misconduct

The Abia State Government has warned public school teachers across the state against absenteeism, dereliction of duty, and professional misconduct, stating that such behaviour will no longer be tolerated under the current administration.

Speaking during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) in Umuahia, the Executive Chairman of the Board, Lydia Onuoha, decried the increasing reports of irregular attendance and absenteeism among some teachers, despite significant improvements in their welfare under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

“The government has observed with dismay the growing trend of absenteeism and irregular attendance in our public schools,” Onuoha said.

“This is happening in spite of the laudable efforts by the present administration to improve teachers’ welfare and the quality of education.”

She described the conduct of some teachers as not only disappointing but also a gross violation of professional ethics, the Public Service Rules, and a betrayal of public trust.

“Let it be known that the full weight of the Public Service Rules shall be invoked where necessary. The government will not hesitate to act decisively in the interest of the children and the future of our state,” she warned.

Onuoha disclosed that erring teachers will face disciplinary actions such as queries, suspensions, and dismissals, in line with civil service regulations and the Teachers’ Code of Conduct.

Despite these challenges, the ASUBEB Chair applauded Governor Alex Otti for prioritizing teachers’ welfare since assuming office.

“Teachers now receive their salaries promptly and consistently, without delays. Long-overdue promotions have been approved, leave allowances are being paid, and the long-awaited 27.5% Teachers Special Salary (TSS) has finally been implemented,” she said.

Onuoha further noted that the state government has backed up its commitment with significant funding.

“Over 20% of the 2025 Abia State budget has been allocated to the education sector, one of the highest in the country. This clearly demonstrates a sincere commitment to education as the cornerstone of development,” she stated.

To curb absenteeism and restore accountability, ASUBEB is rolling out a comprehensive statewide monitoring and enforcement strategy, in partnership with the Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) and School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs).

One of the measures is the introduction of biometric attendance systems in public primary and junior secondary schools to monitor daily presence and punctuality and strengthening of Quality Assurance and Monitoring Teams to conduct unannounced visits and audits.

Also head teachers are required to mandatorily submit monthly attendance to their respective LGEAs and ASUBEB.

“These steps are necessary to ensure that every teacher is held accountable. We are building a system that supports excellence, not excuses,” Onuoha affirmed.

Onuoha reiterated the administration’s commitment to transforming public education in Abia State.

“This administration is not just committed to building more classrooms; we are committed to filling them with qualified, present, motivated, and responsible teachers,” she said.

“Let us uphold the vision of a New Abia where education is not only free and compulsory, but also impactful, purposeful, and transformational.”

She called on teachers to reciprocate the government’s goodwill by showing up, preparing professionally, and fulfilling their moral responsibilities as educators.

“Teachers must rise to the occasion. They must be physically present, professionally prepared, and morally committed to shaping the next generation,” she urged.

The ASUBEB Chair urged members of the public to support the state government’s efforts by reporting absenteeism and misconduct through ASUBEB’s customer care line.

“We call on parents and community members to partner with us. If you observe any lapses in your local schools, please contact us via 07076904864. Together, we can build a better future for our children,” she said.
