Abia Power Boost: Geometric Power’s 188-MW Plant Nears Commissioning

Hope rises for improved power supply in Abia as Geometric Power Limited (GPL) prepares for the official commissioning of the highly anticipated 188-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant in Osisioma Industrial Layout on February 24th 2024.

Underlining the state government’s role in facilitating the project, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu highlighted the government’s efforts.

“The power project underscores the commitment of the state government to boost the economic fortunes of the state through the encouragement of private sector investment in infrastructure,” he stated.

Kanu explained Governor Alex Otti’s involvement with the project since its inception, and prior to assuming office. “His Excellency, as the former Managing Director and CEO of defunct Diamond Bank PLC, was involved with the Geometric Power Project right from its conception,” he revealed.

Prior to the commissioning, GPL secured natural gas supply from the OML 17 oil field, operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Heirs Holding Company. This 188-MW plant, situated in Osisioma Industrial Layout, holds the potential to provide uninterrupted power to nine of Abia’s 17 local government areas.

Previously controlled by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the OML 17 license shifted hands to NNPCL three years ago as part of a government initiative to promote local content and technology transfer. SPDC’s legal challenge against the decision proved unsuccessful, paving the way for NNPCL’s involvement.
