However, the company did not provide documents to back its financing claim.

Globacom’s Senior Manager, Investment and Sponsorship, Sola Mogaji, said the telecom company spent N20bn in less than 10 years.

Mogaji said, “Our brand essence as a company is about empowering across various segments of the economy. In the area of sports and football, Globacom in the last years give or take a little short of 10 years has invested about N20bn across various segments. Either in supporting the football federation or looking at national talent or national teams that we have sponsored.

“You can look at the multiple cash awards across the country, you can think of some of the sponsorships we have had. All the Glo Marathon. Sometime around 2011, we gave around N2bn to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), we gave about N1.9bn to the premier league and so you see the likes of Enyimba FC doing very well in the African tournament winning two laurels.

“These are because of some of the investments we have made in the area of football and Globacom is still very much interested in sponsoring sports and of course supporting football.”

Adenuga’s Glo said the chairman’s penchant to fund sports is propelled by his passion to develop young talents and promote Nigeria’s global image.

The billionaire is worth $6.9bn according to Forbes 2024 ranking and is now the second richest in the country. He is 5th in Africa.

“Globacom under Dr Mike Adenuga Jr. has always been very passionate about talents in Nigeria, supporting the sports industry, especially football. He has always been there, investing and putting in a lot of money,” Senior Investment and Sponsorship of Globacom, Jumobi Mofe-Damijo said.
