“The battle is ongoing as I speak to you. The attackers struck like 15 minutes ago,” a military source said.

It was later gathered that the troops successfully repelled the attack, with casualty figures not yet ascertained.

The incident comes one week after insurgents tried to invade Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, through the Jidarri Polo area of the ancient city.

They were however defeated and pushed back by a combined team of Air Force, Police and the Army.
