Airtel Boosts Data Capacity With N28Bn New 10 MHZ Spectrum Acquisition

Airtel Africa Plc.  has announced the acquisition of 10 MHZ spectrum in Nigeria from Intercellular Nigeria Limited, which will increase the company’s 4G capacity and improve voice/ data services in the country.

Airtel announced the new acquisition which cost $94 (N28.85 billion) million on Monday on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) website.

According to the company, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) charge is included in the fee.

Airtel said the new spectrum would increase the available capacity of the existing network, adding that it would also support the roll-out of 4G in the country.

The company revealed further that it would also provide more opportunities for data/ digital services and broadband services, consequently improve voice and data experience for Nigerian consumers.

Reacting, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Airtel Africa, Raghunath Mandava, said that the move demonstrates the company’s commitment to provide services at the right price and drive businesses in the country forward.

According to him, “With increasing smartphone penetration, data usage and a young growing population, Nigeria represents a significant growth opportunity in data.

“This investment will not only strengthen our leading 4G position in mobile data but also allow us to expand our fixed wireless broadband offer to support the government agenda for faster broadband services with improved coverage and availability.”

The company had first announced its intention to acquire the new spectrum on November 14, 2019.
