Akinjide Buried Privately, Public Events To Hold Later, Says Son

A former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Richard Akinjide (SAN) has been buried in Ibadan, his hometown.

His first son, Abayomi, said in a statement that the renowned lawyer was buried privately on Thursday because of COVID-19.

He said further that public events would be held in his honour at a later date.

The statement read, “Our beloved Patriarch, Chief Richard Osuolale Abimbola Akinjide, who passed on peacefully to glory on April 21, 2020, was laid to rest on Thursday, August 13, 2020 after a private funeral service by the family at The Chapel of St. Peter, The Rock, Jericho, Ibadan, within the family estate.

“This was done, in consultation with the Archbishop of Ibadan, Anglican Communion and the Oyo State Government, due to the prevailing global public health crisis. At the appropriate time, a celebration of life church service and public events will be held in his honour.”

Akinjide died at the age of 88 in Ibadan during the lockdown and his burial.was hitherto delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was more famous for his interpretation of 12; two thirds during the legal fireworks between the presidential.candidate of the Unity Patty Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former President Shehi Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria after the 1983 presidential poll.

This proves decisive as Shagari won at the detriment of Awolowo.
