The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike on Wednesday revealed to newsmen that the routine inspection by the Health Facility, Accreditation, and Monitoring Unit exposed the illicit operation, leading to the swift intervention of security agencies.

According to Obidike, the nurses upon inquiry about the facility’s registration and medical personnel, locked up the premises and ran away, prompting security operatives, including OCHA-Brigade, Civil Defence Corps, and the Police, to assist the monitoring team in gaining access.

He further said upon their entry, officials discovered six pregnant girls, aged 14 to 21 allegedly held against their will.

He added that the victims identified the purported mastermind as Mr Odili Ossai, a self-acclaimed doctor from Delta State, who is currently evading authorities.

“When we gained access into the facility, what we saw was shocking. We discovered six underaged pregnant girls, within ages 14, 15,16, 17 and 21 years, allegedly camped against their wish.

“We interviewed these girls and they told us that they were being camped by one self-acclaimed doctor, who they identified as Mr Odili Ossai from Delta State, now at large,” he said.

Obidike however urged residents to report any healthcare-related illegal activities, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicating such malpractices in the state.

He noted that investigations are underway, with a focus on bringing those responsible for this heinous act to justice.
