Armed Robbers Break Motorist’s Head With Sledgehammer In Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a member of an armed robbery gang, Alo Monday, who hit the owner of a Toyota Camry with sledgehammer over the head and snatched his car.

The suspect, an indigene of Ebonyi State, was said to have been apprehended when the police at Shagamu Division responded to a distress call on Friday night that armed robbers were operating along Shagamu-Ikenne Road.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said this in a statement on Sunday.

The PPRO said upon receiving the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer of Shagamu Division, Superintendent of Police Okiki Agunbiade, mobilised his patrol team and moved to the scene.

The owner of the snatched car, who sustained injury on his head as a result of the sledgehammer attack, was taken to hospital by the police.

The statement read, “On sighting the policemen, the robbers quickly jumped into an already snatched unregistered Toyota Camry, also known as Muscle, and started driving towards Lagos-Shagamu Interchange.

“They were hotly chased by the policemen, consequent upon which they abandoned the car and ran into the bush.

“The entire area was cordoned off by the policemen who combed the bush in search of the hoodlums.

“The effort paid off when one of the robbers, Monday, was apprehended with a sledge hammer, which he used to hit the owner of the car on the head before snatching the vehicle.”

The search for the robbers in the bush was said to have drawn the attention of youths and commercial motorcyclists in the area. They were said to have descended heavily on the suspect after he had been arrested by the police and they beat him to stupor.

The policemen were said to have rescued him from the youths and took him to the hospital for treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Edward Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation while commending his men for their quick response.
