Arsenal where the better side overall and came closest in breaking the deadlock when record signing Alexandre Lacazette curled a shot onto the post after a brilliant counter-attack.

After a goalless first half, Chelsea opened the scoring within a minute of the restart, following terrible defending from Arsenal.

Antonio Conte’s men had won a corner on the right. It was cleared poorly by Granit Xhaka, Cahill boomed a header back into the area and Moses, unmarked controlled superbly and swept home.

Arsenal pressed their opponents for an equalizer and nearly leveled proceedings after Granit Xhaka’s long-range effort was tipped out by Thibaut Courtois.

However, things went bad for the Blues as Pedro was sent off for an ugly challenge on Mohamed Elneny.

From the resulting free-kick, Kolasinac headed the Gunners level to take the match to penalties.

The spot-kicks were taken in the ABBA format. The system sees team A take the first kick followed by team B – before team B go again. Team A then get two successive penalties, until there is a winner.

Gary Cahill opened the shoot-out for Chelsea and slotted past Petr Cech, but the effort was cancelled out by Theo Walcott.

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal stepped forward and sent Courtois the wrong way before the Belgian goalkeeper and Morata both missed horribly.
