ASUU: Union Ready To Resume Despite Covid-19 Upsurge If FG ‘ Provides Necessary Equipment’

The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos(UNILAG) branch, Dr Dele Ashiru, has said that irrespective of the covid-19 upsurge, lecturers in the institution were good to go so long as the government provides everything required to keep the school community safe.

Ashiru made this known in an exclusive chat with THE WHISTLER on Monday ahead of the January 18 resumption date stipulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The commission had also stated that universities should ensure that covid-19 health advisory were observed by the university community when they resume academic activities.

But Ashiru said that the union’s member can only go back to classroom and perform their duties well if government makes adequate provision for them.

“If Government provides us with the necessary equipment and observe all covid-19 protocols, we are ready to work.

“But it is left for government to provide all that is needed to make the job doable,” he said.

Recall that ASUU had on December 23, said that it had “conditionally” called off its strike.

The development was greeted with joy by most Nigerian students (via social media).

Our correspondent also learnt that the union sees the federal government’s dealings with lecturers as unreliable and insincere, which had led to its 9 months old strike action.
