Beirut Explosion: WHO Says Over 300,000 Displaced People Need Shelter, Food

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for urgent support for Lebanon, adding that the recent Beirut explosion made about 300,000 people homeless.

Recall that a blast had occurred at a Port City in the area, which left scores dead and injured.

“More than 5000 people were injured as a result of the blast in #Beirut, over 130 admitted to intensive care units, and up to 300 000 people have been displaced from their homes and need urgent support for shelter and food assistance, “WHO tweeted on Thursday.

WHO also noted that the latest crisis has overwhelmed the medical facilities in the city.

“Five hospitals in #Beirut are either non-functional or partially functional, requiring injured patients to be transferred to health facilities across the country,” it tweeted.

On its part, it stated that health equipment had been dispatched to help at least 2,000 patients, but said
about 15 million dollars are needed to effectively assist Lebanon overcome the crisis.

“In response to the health needs from the blast in #Beirut, WHO has already delivered trauma and surgical supplies to meet the needs of a total of 2000 patients,” it stated.

Recall that the Government had injected 100 million Lebanese dollars for emergency response purposes but further called for assistance from foreign countries.

As such, Canada made a donation of 5 million dollars on Thursday.

President of France, who also visited Lebanon on Thursday, noted that the country needed urgent socio-economic reforms.
