Blackberry Sacks 200 Employees
Blackberry on Monday confirmed that it retrenched about 200 of its employees in Waterloo, Ontario, and also in Florida.
The telecom company said in a statement provided to media outlets that “we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global workforce. This means finding new ways to enable us to capitalize on growth opportunities, while driving toward sustainable profitability across all parts of our business.
“As BlackBerry continues to execute its turnaround plan, we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global work force. As a result, approximately 200 employees have been impacted in Canada and Florida. For those employees that have recently left the company, we know that they have worked hard on behalf of our company and we are grateful for their commitment and contributions.”

The Canadian based company didn’t give reasons for the layoffs but it likely reflects the company’s continued withdrawal from the smartphone manufacturing business.
BlackBerry last year released its first phone running Google’s Android operating system, the Priv, a dramatic move away from building phones running its BlackBerry 10 operating system.
The company’s CEO John Chen however assured users of the smartphone producer’s continued support for the BlackBerry 10.
