Blasphemy: Outrage Over Death Sentence Of Nigerian Singer

Mixed reactions have trailed the death sentence handed down to a Nigerian singer in Kano State on Monday.

22-year-old Yahaya Sharif-Aminu was found guilty of blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad in a song he allegedly circulated on WhatsApp.

The upper Sharia Court in Hausawa Filin Hockey, Kano State, sentenced Sharif-Aminu to death by hanging after pleading guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The police had arraigned the singer on one count of inciting religious creed contrary to section 382 (6) of Kano State Sharia Penal Code Law 2000. His action was said to be capable of hurting the feelings of Muslims.

Meanwhile, prior to Sharif-Aminu’s arrest and eventual death sentence, some youths in Kano were said to have burnt down his family home in protest to his alleged blasphemous song and to demand legal action against him.
