Governor Ganduje was earlier reported to have created the new emirates to reduce the influence of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, by decentralizing of the Kano Emirate Council at the peak of their alleged rift.

The governor had assented to a bill to amend the Kano Emirates Council (establishment) Bill after it was passed by the the Kano State House of Assembly.

Four new emirates – Bichi, Rano, Karaye and Gaya – were consequently created with each having new emirs.

But Sanusi had challenged the move in court.

Justice Na’Abbu, in his ruling, declared that the Kano State House of Assembly had violated the provision of Section 101 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which allows the assembly to make laws.

According to Daily Nigerian, the judge declared the creation of the emirates null and void, as the petition for the creation of the emirate was faulty.
