BREAKING: Omo Agege Elected Deputy President Of 9th Senate

Senator representing Delta State central senatorial district in the Senate, Omo-Agege has been elected as the new Deputy Senate President.

Omo Agege, who was elected today on the floor of the senate during the inauguration of ninth National Assembly through the open ballot polled a total of 68  votes to defeat his closest rival for the position, immediate Past Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu representing Enugu West Senatorial District who polled 37 votes.

105 out of the 109 senators participated in the election.

Both Omo-Agege and Ekweremadu hails from the South South and South East geopolitical zones respectively.

Omo-Agege was nominated by Katsina North Senator-elect Ahmad Babba-Kaita for the position of Deputy Senate President.

Recall that only yesterday, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), formally adopted Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege for the position of Deputy Senate President of the 9th National Assembly.

Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC National Publicity Secretary in a statement in Abuja, said the decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the NWC held in Abuja.

Recall also that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in the early hours of the today dropped his deputy senate presidency ambition to support Omo-Agege, a decision he said was in the interest of the APC and Nigeria at large as he cannot go against the decision of the party which endorsed the Delta senator.

Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, a lawyer and politician hails from Orogun, Ughelli North Local Government of Delta State and the only Senator of the APC from the state.

He was born on August 3, 1963 and attended St. George Grammar school, Obinomba Obiaruku. Delta State. He graduated in 1985 from the University of Benin with a degree in Law. He was called to the Nigerian bar in 1986, and followed it up with a master’s degree in Law from Tulane University Law School, USA.

Omo-Agege was appointed as the Secretary to State Government (SSG) of Delta State by Governor James Ibori in 2007.

He ran for senate in 2015 under the platform of the Labour Party, LP. He was elected as senator on March 28, 2015.

In March 7, 2017, he defected from the LP to the APC.
