Buhari Orders Prosecution Of Babachir 15 Months After His Removal For Corruption

President Muhammadu Buhari is said to have ordered anti-corruption agencies in the country to press criminal charges against the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Babachir Lawal, over his alleged embezzlement of funds meant for Internationally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East.

This was revealed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo who on Sunday said Mr Lawal, alongside the former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mr Ayo Oke, have been recommend for prosecution by President Buhari.

Recall that the former SGF was sacked on October 31, 2017, following his indictment in the scandal by a committee of the Nigerian Senate.

Mr Oke had equally been removed as DG NIA after huge sums of money believed to belong to the agency were discovered in a private residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos state in 2017.

Disclosing the development, Osinbajo was quoted as saying during a programme organised by a Christian group affiliated to the GRILL: “The president has directed that the SGF and former DG of NIA should be prosecuted.”

The development follows several allegations of lopsidedness that have trailed the anti-corruption fight of the Buhari administration.

Mr Osinbajo had said during the programme, “we are expecting that prosecution will take place.

“The next of course is that criminal allegations will be filed against them and the prosecution process will be completed,” added the Vice President.
