Chelsea Beat Brighton In Seven-Goal Thriller To Maintain Perfect Start

Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season after surviving a late Brighton comeback to secure a thrilling 4-3 victory at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The victory marked Xabi Alonso’s first home league match in charge of Chelsea and extended the Blues’ winning run to two matches after their opening-day victory over Fulham.

Romeo Lavia gave Chelsea the perfect start after just four minutes, scoring his first goal for the club following a goalkeeping error from Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen.

Mats Wieffer had initially prevented Joao Pedro from scoring from a corner, blocking the Brazilian’s header on the goalline. However, Verbruggen fumbled the ball and Lavia reacted quickest to tap home.

Chelsea doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Morgan Rogers beat Brighton’s record signing Luka Vuskovic on the left before delivering a cross into the box.

Pedro Neto got ahead of Ferdi Kadioglu to meet the delivery and prod the ball past Verbruggen.

The hosts added a third in the 32nd minute after Jorrel Hato used his pace to beat Wieffer and find Joao Pedro, who finished against his former club.

Brighton, however, refused to surrender and reduced the deficit before half-time.

Chelsea debutant Emiliano Martinez came off his line to deny Charalampos Kostoulas, but the loose ball fell to Malick Yalcouye, who volleyed into the net.

Brighton returned from the break with renewed purpose and pulled another goal back in the 63rd minute.

Yalcouye released Pascal Gross, whose effort took a significant deflection off Joao Pedro and wrong-footed Martinez to make it 3-2.

Chelsea were forced to withstand sustained pressure before Cole Palmer restored their two-goal advantage in the 74th minute.

The England international produced a moment of individual brilliance, curling a superb effort from outside the box beyond Verbruggen to make it 4-2.

Brighton scored again deep into stoppage time when Gross headed past Martinez, but the Seagulls could not find an equaliser as Chelsea held on for all three points.

The result also provided an impressive Premier League debut for Martinez, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a £7.5m deal confirmed less than four hours before kick-off.

Alonso surprised many by immediately handing the 33-year-old Argentine a starting role, giving him an opportunity to revive his career after falling out of favour at Villa.

Martinez, who turns 34 next week, had struggled to secure his place at Villa following a failed move to Juventus and the arrival of Japan international Zion Suzuki as Unai Emery’s preferred goalkeeper.

The World Cup winner received loud support from the Stamford Bridge crowd throughout his debut, producing an assured performance despite conceding three goals.

Two of Brighton’s goals were particularly unfortunate for Martinez.

His save from Kostoulas fell directly to Yalcouye for Brighton’s first goal, while Gross’ second-half effort took a major deflection off Joao Pedro.

Martinez’s best moment came shortly before Brighton’s second goal when he produced a sharp diving save to deny Diego Gomez.

He also made another important stop to prevent Olivier Boscagli from scoring what would have been Brighton’s equaliser.

Chelsea have invested heavily in their squad under their new ownership, but the club’s goalkeeping position has remained an area of concern.

Martinez’s debut could provide Alonso with the experienced goalkeeper the club has been searching for.

The Argentine’s arrival could also raise fresh questions over the future of Robert Sanchez.

Sanchez, who cost Chelsea £25m when he joined from Brighton in 2023, was not included in the matchday squad after another error-strewn display in Chelsea’s 3-2 opening-day win at Fulham.

The 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders was instead named on the bench as Alonso’s number two.

With the transfer window set to close on Tuesday, Sanchez could now join the growing list of players Chelsea are reportedly looking to move on.

Chelsea’s attacking quality also provided further encouragement for Alonso, with Palmer, Rogers, Neto and Joao Pedro causing Brighton’s defence significant problems.

However, the Blues face a much tougher test in their next league outing when they travel to face reigning champions Arsenal on Sunday, September 6, at 4:30pm BST.

For Brighton, the defeat was a sharp reminder of the level required to compete with the Premier League’s leading sides.

The Seagulls had begun the campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, raising expectations following back-to-back eighth-place finishes under manager Fabian Hurzeler since his appointment in 2024.

Against Chelsea, however, Brighton’s defence struggled to cope with the hosts’ attacking width and movement.

Vuskovic, the club’s £46m summer signing, and his defensive colleagues were repeatedly exposed by Hato and Neto operating from wide positions, while Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro caused further problems through the middle.

Hurzeler will nevertheless take encouragement from Brighton’s second-half response.

The visitors came close to completing a remarkable comeback despite having played a midweek Conference League qualifier against Norway’s Tromso to secure their place in the competition.

Yalcouye was one of Brighton’s standout performers, playing a decisive role in their first two goals.

The 20-year-old Ivory Coast international spent the previous two seasons on loan at Sturm Graz and Swansea City after joining Brighton in 2024.

His performance at Stamford Bridge suggests he could play a more prominent role for the Seagulls this season.

Hurzeler’s immediate task will be to ensure Brighton reproduce the intensity and quality displayed after half-time more consistently, rather than the side that was overwhelmed by Chelsea during the opening 45 minutes.
