Confusion Over Obi Cubana’s Whereabouts As EFCC, Associate Give Conflicting Accounts

There is confusion over the whereabouts of popular socialite and businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, following reports of his arrest and supposed release by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

While the EFCC confirmed his release to THE WHISTLER on Thursday, an associate of the businessman has claimed that he is still in custody of the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC had remained silent on his reported arrest and detention days after the news broke.

The commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, however confirmed Obi Cubana’s release while responding to THE WHISTLER’s enquiry on Thursday.

“He has been released,” Uwujaren said in a terse response but remained mum on reasons for his detention.

Recall that the EFCC was said to have arrested the businessman on Monday over allegations bordering on money laundering and tax fraud.

Obi Cubana had, however, posted a photo of himself on his Instagram page the following day with the Caption “Unbroken”.

But days after the post, there hasn’t been any other indication of his release, prompting a social media influencer and his close associate, Amanda Chisom, to express concern about his whereabouts.

Chisom said in an Instagram post: “What I want to know is why the EFCC is still holding Obi Cubana when he has met all his bail conditions. You cannot tell me this is still about Tax, if he has a tax case or laundering case, go to court and let him go.

“Why are you holding him, if this is not Tribal profiling. Is it because he is Igbo that you will treat him in such despicable manner?” she queried.
