CORRUPTION: Kwankwaso In The Net As EFCC Swoops On Ex-Govs

At least eight former governors have recently come under the spotlight of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a move believed to be part of the anti-graft agency’s crackdown on corrupt ex-governors and public officer holders.

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is the latest ex-governor to be featured in the ant-corruption swoop.

Acting on a 2015 petition filed by one Barrister Mustapha Danjuma, the EFCC on Friday sealed off a property belonging to Kwankwaso as part of investigations into his alleged diversion of local government funds amounting to N3.08 billion while he was Kano governor between 2011 and 2015.

The property is located on Miller Road in Kano metropolis, reports Daily Trust.

The EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, had on Thursday revealed that the anti-graft agency was on the verge of filing 800 new court cases against corrupt politicians, public holders and cyberfraudsters.

Bawa told State House correspondents after the weekly briefing by heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies that the commission would prosecute “all over again” the case of former Abia State governor, Orji Kalu.

“We have prosecuted a number of people within this period, secured 185 convictions and you are aware that for two months, the courts have been on strike. We have filed 367 cases and as I said within this week, we are going to file 800 cases in court on public corruption as well as cybercrime,” he said.

The EFCC had on Thursday arrested former Abia Governor, Theodore Orji, over a petition alleging that he diverted N521 billion during his tenure in office.

Other ex-governors who have recently been either arrested, invited or detained by the anti-graft agency over corruption allegations are former Senate President and ex-Kwara Governor, Bukola Saraki; former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari and immediate-past Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Others are former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha and ex-Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, who was arrested alongside his wife, Mairo.
