COVID-19: NUC Orders Closure Of Universities

The National Universities Commission has ordered the closure of universities across the country, going by the threat of the coronavirus menace.

NUC’s deputy executive secretary, Suleiman Rammon-Yusuf, disclosed this in a circular on Friday.

The directive also urged Vice Chancellors to ensure that universities remain close for one month starting from March 23,2020.

He said the order was in compliance with global health guidelines geared towards curbing the effect of the virus.

“I write at the bearest of the Executive Secretary to inform Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities that as part of measures to contain and prevent the spread of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) throughout the country, approval has been granted for the closure of all schools for a period of one (1) month, commencing from Monday, 23rd March, 2020,” the circular stated.

The directive follows the order by the federal government that all educational institutions should be closed till further notice.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had also urged the management of all educational institutions in the country to shut down their schools and campuses.

NANS’ director of travels and exchange, Dominic Philip disclosed this in a statement on the association’s twitter account on Friday.

According to the statement, lives of all Nigerian students are precious and every step should be taken to preserve them.

“NANS is left with no better option than call for the closure of all of our schools and campuses across the nation so as to curtail the spread of the virus as the effect of the spread can be devastating on our students and Nigeria.”
