Customs Boss Sacks 17 Officers, More To Go

Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd,) has discharged 17 officers from the Service over drug addiction, certificate forgery, theft and absence from duty from January to September, 2016.

There are also indications that more NCS officers are still going to be sacked.

According to a statement issued by Wale Adeniyi, Customs Public Relations Officer, “Investigations into offences committed by the officers in the senior category are now being concluded. Officers found guilty are expected to face similar penalties.

“These disciplinary measures were taken after series of investigations and deliberations by the disciplinary committee and recommendations were made to the management.

“This process is a continuation of the reform agenda which the Comptroller-General promised upon his assumption of office which emphasized discipline, good conduct and transparency.”

Again, it was learnt that the anti-smuggling unit of the NSC also arrested 163 suspected smugglers between January and September.

The document put DPV of 41,138 cartons of frozen poultry products seized at N222million while that of 56 units of 12 cut buses at N105million.

“On vegetable oil, 382 Jerry cans, 286 cartons, 120 pieces of 10L and 1250 empty Jerry cans with DPV of N35million were seized,’’ the statement read in part.

According to the statement, other items seized include: new and used textiles materials; new and used footwears; mosquito insecticides; Bonita Spaghetti; soap; Used tyres; raw and unprocessed hides and skin with DPV at N621million.

Meanwhile, the record of revenue figures from collected for nine months include N33million in January, N52m illion in February while N62million was generated in March.

The Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), Controller Mohammed Dahiru said the unit has been able to suppress smuggling.

He said, “I believe we have been able to achieve greater percentage of suppressing smuggling and if somebody is to be objective and be fair to the Nigeria Customs Service, you will give Nigeria Customs Service a pass mark.”
