Deputy Commissioner of Police Feared Killed, Journalist Shot In Shiite, Police Clash

A senior police officer, Usman Umar, is feared dead in the protest by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as Shi’ites in Abuja, Monday.

Umar, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, was allegedly shot dead by the protesting IMN members.

Until his death this Monday, DCP Umar was in charge of Operations at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.

A journalist, who was beside Umar when a bullet hit him, said the deceased was trying to talk the Shi’ite members out of their violent protest.

THE WHISTLER learnt that after being hit by bullet, he was immediately taken to an undisclosed hospital where he gave up the ghost.

Already, over six members of the IMN are reported dead, while many others escaped with injuries.

Also, members of the public caught in the mayhem abandoned their vehicles while the ever busy federal secretariat was immediately deserted.

The protesters allegedly destroyed some vehicles, set the NEMA ambulance bay ablaze, while a Channels television reporter, whose identity is yet to be made known was also hit by bullets.

The police have asked members of the public to stay clear of the area as they battle to restore order.
