These days, it takes luck and prayers to find suitable marriage partners and many may not be bothered by any other thing  to say ‘I do’ once they find him or her.

But before you commit the rest of your life to someone, a doctor has advised intending couples to know their medical status in order to be prepared for any hurdle that may arise.

Dr. Daniel Mfon, who spoke to THE WHISTLER , revealed there are eight  vital medication examinations to do before couples  make up their minds  to walk down the aisle.

HIV And Syphilis

“I have seen many couples who are currently having issues, because one party was not aware that their partner was HIV positive,” Dr. Mfon stated.

According to him, the knowledge of your partner’s status will help you take the right measures to protect yourself should you decide to go ahead. Having prior knowledge and taking the appropriate steps as directed by your doctor will also reduce the risk of infertility or miscarriages.

Genotype:

“This test is important to ascertain whether one or both partners are “sicklers”(SS) or carriers of the sickle cell trait (AS) or whether their genotype is normal (AA).

“When this is checked and cleared beforehand it helps the couple to avoid having a child with sickle cell disease which often results in serious illness.”

However Dr. Umoren confirmed that this is the only test that couples readily undertake without being prompted due to awareness of the risks involved.

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C:

These conditions can last lifelong and if not properly managed can strain a marriage. So, it is important couples know their partners hepatitis virus  status to better  protect themselves and  seek for adequate medical care

Blood Group/Rhesus:

“I always advise intending couples to have knowledge of the blood group of their potential spouse to avoid issues relating to blood group or rhesus incompatibility.

“It also helps on rainy days. Let’s say the wife is bleeding after delivery and they need blood immediately, and maybe the facility does not have a blood blank to save her life. If the husband is aware that they have a compatible blood group, he can easily donate.

“It also helps to reduce delivery risk on their children. Blood groups can either be A, B, or AB but there’s another component referred to as the Rhesus factor which is either positive or negative.”

According to him,  if a Rhesus negative woman marries a Rhesus Positive man, and precautions are not taken during pregnancy, there is a 50% chance that the newborn will be born with a disease called  hemolytic(the rupturing of red blood cells)

Pregnancy test

This can be neglected but most times people do it to answer the question of fidelity and integrity.

Sperm count test/ Fertility profile test:

“Fertility tests include seminal analysis, hormonal assay; pelvic ultrasound scans to ascertain the state of the internal reproductive organs and so on.

“This is not completely necessary or recommend for start- up couples  because it brings a lot of anxiety that is not healthy for the about –to-wed couples.

“Because your fertility profile will show that your chance of becoming fertile is not good yet you take in after a month while another woman’s profile may be excellent but she has to wait for 15 years months before taking in.

“However the chances of a woman becoming fertile agree more with her fertility profile.”

“But if you do this test because you want to avoid surprises and emotional stress, then you should also run a sperm count test for the man.”
