DR Congo Dump Egypt Out Of Nations Cup

The Democratic Republic of Congo recorded a major upset by dumping Egypt out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in the round of 16.

Congo booked their place in the quarter-finals with a penalty shootout victory over the Pharaohs.

The regulation time ended 1-1 and Congo won the shoot out 8-7 to set up a quarter finals clash with Guinea on Sunday.

Meschack Elia headed in Yoane Wissa’s cross to give DR Congo the lead in the 37th minute before Mostafa Mohammed restored parity for Egypt from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time.

Hegazi missed a glorious chance to give Egypt the lead when he fluffed his header wide from a good position.

Both sides failed to find the winner in the regulation time as it ended 1-1.

Egypt were reduced to 10 men in the first half of the extra time after Mohamed Hamdy was sent off for two bookable offences.

DR Congo could not take advantage of the numerical edge as the extra time also ended 1-1.

It was a nerve-wracking shootout as goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi scored the 18th spot kick to send his country into the quarter finals at the expense of seven-time champions, Egypt.

Egypt’s goalkeeper, Gabaski missed his own kick after his effort clipped the cross bar before Mpasi finished emphatically to send the Egyptians out.

The Pharaohs of Egypt failed to win a single game in the competition.

Earlier on, Guinea earned a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea and they will now meet DR Congo for a place in the semi finals on Sunday.
