EFCC Has Stopped Governors From Throwing Parties Abroad With Public Funds – Magu

Nigerian politicians, including state governors, are now afraid of displaying ostentatious lifestyle abroad with public funds due to the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the EFCC.
Magu made the revelation at a State House conference, Abuja, during the second Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS) 2019, organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the Nigeria Diaspora and Alumni Network (NIDAN).

He urged the participants to see the fight against corruption as a godly act because it will position the nation for prosperity and development.

He said that as a result of EFCC’s impact, corrupt elements in the country are no longer finding it easy to engage in corrupt practices.

“We have been able to curb excesses of Nigerians with the fear of EFCC. It is no longer business as usual. Nigerians no longer hire an entire hotel and block streets in London. Before now, some governors will hire an entire hotel abroad with public funds and block the streets and throw parties; that no longer happens.

”It is a divine mandate by God for all of us to fight corruption.

“EFCC will do everything possible to protect the investment of the Nigerian Diaspora.

On her part, the Chairman of NIDCOM , Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said that because so many highly trained Nigerians are living outside the country, government should focus more on human capital development as well as create a society that is safe for Nigerians in the diaspora to invest.

“In America alone, we have six thousands Nigerian doctors not to talk of other medical personnel. So it’s important to invite Nigerians in diaspora home to see where they can invest in Nigeria,” she said.

Furthermore, a former governor of Central bank of Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo, said that human capital development can guarantee  sustainable development for the nation.

His words : “Our duty as a marginal contributor in a fast-growing economy is to contribute to a place where your skills and professionalism are required. And the creation of an enabling environment was key in the developmental strategy and also the utilization of human capital.

“Investment in Nigeria should not be seen as charity but to be seen as a duty and responsibility of all and for any country to leverage its resources for economic growth, it required development and empowerment of its homelands,” he said.
