The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday held its first-ever Nigerian Youths Walk Against Corruption, across the 36 states of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The walk, which was in collaboration with the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) and the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports started at about 7:46 am from the anti-graft agency’s Wuse office through NEMA, ITF, NIPC, Transcorp Hilton offices and the Unity Fountain.

The long walk also got to the Federal Secretariat and the Appeal Court and back to the commission’s office.

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, as well as hundreds of corps members participated in the walk.

Addressing the crowd, Magu appealed to Nigerians to take ownership of the fight against corruption.

He said: “Youths and women own the future of this country. They’re the most vulnerable people. They’re the victims of corruption. They’re the most affected when it comes to the evils of corruption; that’s why I want to appeal to you to please take ownership in the fight against corruption. They’re the most affected. You can see now, it’s almost 11am, If you enter the federal secretariat, you will see less than ten percent of government workers. That is just unfortunate.

“So we will all fight corruption because it is the greatest enemy of mankind. If you can address the issue of corruption, there will be no Boko Haram, there will be no banditry. There will be no kidnapping. So we must put heads together and fight corruption, we cannot fight it alone.”

Our correspondent also reports that the walk took place in Kano with the Director General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim in attendance.

In Kwara the State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, led a marathon walk across downtown Ilorin.

AbdulRazaq was joined in the over two-hour walk by the Speaker of the House of Assembly Yakubu Danladi; zonal head of the EFCC, Isyaku Sharu; State Coordinator of the NYSC, Esther Ikupolati; members of the state assembly, hundreds of members of the NYSC; artisans; and civil society organisations.
