#EndSARS: Atiku Begs Buhari To Do These Three Things For Protesters

In view of recent escalation of violence in parts of the country, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has appealed for three things from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku took his Facebook page to express sadness over reports of killings resulting from alleged infiltration of the ongoing #EndSARS protests by hoodlums.

According to him, the youths who have been protesting against police brutality and ‘bad governance’, have acted responsibly.

He noted that the #EndSARS protesters were “not unreasonable” as their demands were justifiable.

THE WHISTLER recalls that the demands include the immediate release of all arrested protesters, justice and compensation for citizens who died due to police brutality, and inauguration of independent panels by state governments to investigate and prosecute all errant policemen.

Others were psychological evaluation and retraining of operatives of the defunct SARS and increase in police officers’ remuneration, amongst others.

The former vice president said his first appeal to Buhari was for him to resist, “the temptation to use further maximum force on #EndSARS protesters.”

Secondly, Atiku urged the president to, “appeal to their reason by speedily implementing their reasonable demands. The use of maximum force will aggravate, rather than placate.”

He said, “When the government shows that it cares, the citizens will farewell. Now is the time to apply reason, rather than brute force.”

Atiku further appealed to the president to, “talk to the nation, and particularly the youth of Nigeria.”

THE WHISTLER recalls that one of the initial five-point demand of the protesters was for the president to address them in a live broadcast.
