EndSARS: International Court Begins Lekki Shooting Probe

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has disclosed that it’s conducting a preliminary investigation into the events surrounding the #EndSARS protests and shooting of peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos state, BBC reported Wednesday.

In a statement, the ICC prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda had earlier said it received information on alleged crimes to which it has now instituted a probe.

The ICC stated that the examination would “assess whether the legal criteria for opening an investigation under the Rome Statute… are met”.

The international court confirmed it is analysing the material sent and its findings would be made public when a final decision on the process is reached, according to BBC.

For weeks, group of protesters crowded the streets of Nigeria, demanding the disbandment of the notorious special anti-robbery squad unit of the Nigeria police, a call which later expanded to include an end to police brutality.

On Tuesday, October 20, soldiers were deployed to the Lekki toll gate to enforce a curfew imposed by the Lagos state government, and the military officers opened fire on protesters, killing and injuring a number of people.

But the Army had denied the allegation.
