#EndSARS: PDP Puts Party Activities, Electioneering On Hold Over Lekki Shooting

As a mark of honour to those killed in the Lekki Tollgate shooting as well as other killings in various parts of the country, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is putting on hold all political and electioneering activities.

The party said this on Friday in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

The military had on Tuesday night, opened fire on #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate area of Lagos State, allegedly resulting in the death of several persons.

There is no official confirmation as to the number of those killed. The military too has denied shooting at the protesters.

The suspension of party activities by PDP came barely a day after the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the postponement of legislative bye-elections in some states of the federation scheduled for October 31st.

Ologbondiyan said, “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has put all its political and electioneering activities on hold as a further mark of honour for Nigerian youths who were killed at the Lekki Toll Gate as well as other killings that have occurred in various parts of our nation over the unfortunate fall-out of the EndSARS peaceful protest.”

According to him, although, such a decision comes at a high cost, the party holds that it was a step in the right direction, given the prevailing circumstance.

He called on INEC to continue to monitor the situation and use the period to fine-tune its preparations to conduct peaceful, free, fair and credible elections as part of the much-needed panacea for the restiveness in the country.

The PDP spokesman further called on,
“the security agencies to also use the period to perfect their roles in electoral operations and tidy up all arrangements to guarantee the right atmosphere for peaceful and transparent polls where the safety of the voters as well as the sanctity of the ballot box are guaranteed.

“The PDP also restates its call for calm and prayers for our nation at this critical time in our national life, even as all hands must be on the deck in finding solutions and the way forward for our nation.”
