#EndSARS: Respect Nigerians, End Attack On Protesters By Police, SERAP Tells FG

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has frowned on policemen who fired tear gas at peaceful protesters in Abuja on Monday.

SERAP called on both the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force and the federal government to note that Nigerian lives mattered.

It also stressed that journalists should be allowed to carry out their reportorial duties without any form of intimidation or attack.

“We condemn reports that @PoliceNG are firing tear gas at peaceful protesters in Abuja.

“Nigerian authorities should respect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful protest, allow Nigerians to demonstrate peacefully and journalists to report on the protests,” it tweeted on Monday.

SERAP further said that going against people’s fundamental rights pitted the police against the United Nations (UN).

“The UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials require authorities to promptly report on and investigate all incidents of law enforcement officials killing or injuring people with firearms.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that men of the Nigeria Police Force fired tear gas at protesters in Abuja on Monday.

THE WHISTLER observed that police men were also stationed in front of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters with Armoured Personnel Carrier and water cannons.
