Enugu Council Chairman Empowers 1, 225 Women With Over N40m

Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State has empowered 1, 225 women with over N40m to boost their economic activities in the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic, council chairman Peter Andy Omeje told THE WHISTLER weekend.

Hon Omeje said, “It’s part of our human capacity building initiatives. We were barley one week in office when Covid-19 ravaged the globe. We empowered 595 women with N50, 000 each to start petty businesses. We also empowered 650 women with N20, 000 each for the same purpose.

“We have a special set of youths, four men and a lady, with special gifts. We identified them after our talent hunt. We empowered each of them with N500, 000 to support their endeavours.”

He said he was spurred to deliver on his assignment to prove that youths could champion good governance. In his words, “This is the first time that the youth are being factored deeply not just at the state level, but in the council. My coming has given hope to the youth constituency.

“I encourage youths to set targets for themselves. We have appointed 312 persons into various roles, and 90% are youths. The mantra of ‘youths as leaders of tomorrow’, at a point seemed as if the tomorrow has refused to come. We realised that tomorrow was not hijacked when Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi came on board. This is why youths have become part of the nucleus of decision-making in Igboeze South LGA.”

He also blamed some leaders for youth restiveness.

Quoting him, “Some actions of youths are out of frustration. Some leaders remember these youths during elections only. Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is different. He is the only governor that anybody can call on phone to discuss issues. If leaders toe that path, it will calm the nerves of the youths. I advise youths to toe the line of peace.”
