Enugu INEC Office Attackers ‘Overpowered Security’- Commission

The yet-to-identified persons that set some vehicles ablaze at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Enugu “overpowered the security personnel on duty and tried to set the entire building ablaze,” according to the commission.

INEC’s chairman of information and voter education committee, Mr Festus Okoye, stated this while reacting to the incident that occurred Sunday night.

He said, “The attackers set the foyer ablaze, vandalised some offices in the main building and caused extensive damage to some of the commission’s movable assets within the premises.

“Six Toyota hiluxes were burnt down while two more were smashed and damaged. The spate of attacks on the commission’s facilities portends dangers to national electoral activities.”

The INEC resident electoral commissioner, Enugu State, Mr Emeka Ononamadu, told newsmen, Monday, that the unidentified attackers planned to set the entire building ablaze, save for the proactive response of security operatives and the state fire service.

THE WHISTLER reported that INEC office at Obollo-Afor in Udenu LGA of the state was last week burnt.

Police said it was caused by power surge.

The intervention of the state fire service and the police averted the complete consumption of the facilities by fire.

Meanwhile, Enugu State Police Commissioner Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, in a statement, today, ordered “emplacement of adequate security within the precincts of the office and the launch of a full-scale investigation to unravel the mystery behind the act, as well as fish out the assailants.”
