Ex-French Footballer, Adams Dies After Being In Coma For 39 Years

Jean-Pierre Adams, a former French National team player who has been in coma for the past 39 years has died.

Adams died on Monday at the age of 73, according to his former clubs.

The event leading to his medical condition was a botched surgery that starved him of oxygen.

Adams had on Wednesday March 17, 1982, went into hospital for a routine operation on a damaged tendon in his knee, but on that date, the hospital staff were on strike.

“Given it was not a vital operation, that the hospital was on strike, they were missing doctors and this woman was looking after eight patients, in two different rooms, someone should have called me to say they were going to delay the operation,” his wife told CNN in 2016.

“They never did — and between the anaesthetist and trainee, numerous errors were made.

“Adams was badly intubated, with one tube blocking the pathway to his lungs rather than ventilating them, meaning he was starved of oxygen whereupon he suffered a cardiac arrest.”

He was born in Senegal and plaid for nine consecutive seasons in France’s top division, playing for Nice and Paris Saint-Germain.

He was among the first blacks to play for the French National Team.

The Frenchman began his football career as a central defender in Fontainebleu, where he helped the side win its amateur championship.

Nimes said on Twitter, “We learned this morning of the disappearance of Jean-Pierre Adams.

“He had worn the colors of Nîmes Olympique 84 times and formed with Marius Trésor ‘the black guard’ in the French team.

“The Club offers its most sincere condolences to its loved ones and to its family.”

Nice football club tweeted, “Nice was heartbroken to learn of the passing of Jean-Pierre Adams, who fell into a coma on March 17, 1982. Nice

“The former defender wore the colors of the Gym 145 times from 1973 to 1977. OGC Nice stands with the pain of his relatives who have looked after him for 39 years.”

The club will pay tribute to him at their home match against Monaco on September 19.

“PSG has lost, this Monday 6 September, one of its glorious elders,” PSG wrote on Twitter.

“Defender of the Red and Blue and the French team, Jean-Pierre Adams wore the Parisian colors from 1977 to 1979. The Club offers its condolences to his family and loved ones.”
