Facebook To End Support For Blackberry Devices

BlackBerry has been hit with a heavy blow as Facebook pulled support for its social media apps from the mobile platform.

Recall that last month, WhatsApp, a social media app owned by Facebook, announced that it would discontinue its Blackberry 10 and BBOS apps by the end of the year.

This means, BlackBerry owners will have to use Facebook’s website if they will like to access the social network.

“We are extremely disappointed in their decision,” said Lou Gazzola, BlackBerry’s senior marketing manager for developer relations.

“As we know so many users love these apps. We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands.

“Despite this, we have worked hard to ensure that our end-users have the best experience in light of this decision, and we are continuing to search for alternate solutions.”

It’s unclear at what point Facebook plans to do this, however, users went to twitter to vent their frustration at the social networking company’s decision to discontinue support for the Blackberry 10 and BBOS apps.

One user, Leslie Clarke wrote: “I too am upset that BB10 Leap users will lose WhatsApp and FB…I have to use my Samsung tablet to get the experience.

“BB will lose all its users who will have no choice but to switch or use other devices for basic messaging & social media.

“You are so committed to developers that you have published no roadmap for your developer tools for how many months now?” another wrote, bemoaning the lack of developer support.

“Developers are not foolish enough to spend time on a platform that BlackBerry themselves are not spending much time on, are they?”

Blackberry, last year released its first Android support smartphone ‘Priv’.
