Flood Displaces Over 1,000 Katsina Residents

More than 1,000 people across 13 communities in Katsina State have been displaced by devastating floods.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Kaduna Operations Office, in collaboration with the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Nigeria Red Cross, has launched a joint flood assessment to determine the full scale of the damage.

In a statement shared via X on Thursday, NEMA said the operation is being carried out by its Kaduna Operations Office in collaboration with the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Nigeria Red Cross.

The exercise started in Kankia Local Government Area, which is the worst hit by the disaster.

According to the findings, “approximately 1,000 persons were affected across 13 communities, with hundreds of houses and properties destroyed.”

Many of the displaced victims are currently seeking refuge at Tashan Lado Primary School, near the Kankia Local Government Council Secretariat.

Authorities confirmed that “about 200 people are living in a camp temporarily provided for those who lost their homes.”

The joint team also reported severe destruction in Sabon Duniya community, where “hundreds of houses were destroyed, with some completely collapsed, leaving many residents homeless.”

However, the assessment team disclosed that their operations have been hampered by fresh rainfall in the early hours of Thursday, which made access to some of the worst-hit communities difficult.

“This challenge is slowing down efforts to determine the full extent of the damage,” officials said.

The agency said that despite the setbacks, SEMA, the Red Cross, and community leaders are working together to ensure the process goes smoothly. Evacuation efforts are ongoing, and many victims have already been rescued and provided with temporary shelter.

“The assessment and other response efforts are continuing, and more details will be communicated as updates become available,” the agency assured.
