Floods In Osun, Oyo Render Dozens Homeless As 30 Communities Affected — NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South West Zonal Office, has disclosed that severe flooding in Osun and Oyo States has resulted in many households losing their homes and requiring urgent assistance.

NEMA, in collaboration with the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), conducted an assessment of the flood and rainstorm disasters that struck 13 communities in the Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State on October 5th, 2023.

NEMA, in a tweet on Wednesday, said the disaster was triggered by a substantial volume of rainfall accompanied by strong wind.

Approximately 1,200 individuals across the 13 communities were affected, and the disaster also caused significant damage to public infrastructure.

“NEMA South West Zonal Office in collaboration with Osun SEMA conducted an assessment to ascertain the extent of damage. The disaster was reported to occur as a result of heavy rainfall which was accompanied by heavy wind.

“During the assessment, it was observed that about 1200 persons had been affected within the 13 communities while many households have been rendered homeless and require immediate assistance. The disaster also damaged other public infrastructures.”

Similarly, in Oyo State, a joint assessment team comprising NEMA’s Southwest Zonal Office and officials from Ido Local Government Area assessed the damage from flooding and rainstorms in 17 communities on October 11th, 2023.

The flooding in Oyo State was linked to the overflow of the Omi River that flows through the communities, a recurrent issue worsened during torrential rainfall.

This resulted in substantial property damage and the destruction of livelihoods, including local markets and farmland, with fish ponds being washed away, said NEMA.

The joint assessment in Osun and Oyo States called for immediate relief support and the implementation of long-term strategies to address the recurring challenges associated with flood-related disasters in the region.

“Assessment of flood and rainstorm disaster at seventeen communities in Ido Local Government Area Of Oyo State, a joint assessment team of NEMA Southwest Zonal Office and Officials of Ido LGA, Oyo State conducted an assessment of seventeen (17) communities affected by flood/ rainstorm disaster on 11th October 2023.

“In the course of the assessment, it was observed that the cause of the flood disaster in that area was as a result of overflow of the Omi River that passed through those communities. The team was made to understand that the incidence has become a recurrent issue especially when there is torrential rainfall communities were seriously affected by the flood, properties were damaged, means of livelihood were destroyed at the market, and farmland such as fish ponds washed away.”

Mr. Olanrewaju Kazeem, Assistant Zonal Coordinator of the South West Zone, who led the NEMA assessment team, extended his condolences to the affected communities.

He called for adoption of Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies to mitigate future disasters.
