Fund Existing Colleges of Education, Not Create New Ones – COEASU

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union(COEASU),has reacted to the approval given by President Muhammadu Buhari for the establishment of six new colleges of education across geo-political zones of the country.

President of the union, Nuhu Ogirima who spoke to THE WHISTLER, urged the federal government to tackle funding challenges faced by existing colleges of education, warning that the newly established ones would suffer from lack of funding.

“However, federal government needs take cognisance of the funding challenges the existing COEs have been grappling with. Would the new COEs be insulated?,” he asked.

Ogirima however acknowledged that the approval may have been given in order to broaden access to education across the country.

“On the new colleges, perhaps federal government is looking forward to expanding access to teacher education through the establishment of new COEs, ” he said.

He added: “It’s also a political decision as it has to do with taking along states which hitherto have no Federal COE,” he said.
