Gbajabiamila Meets Osinbajo, SGF As NLC Insists On Monday Strike

Hours after meeting the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has met with the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, to stop the strike scheduled for Monday by the union.

The NLC had insisted on going on with its planned strike despite Gbajabiamila’s offer of palliatives to the organized labour at the meeting that earlier held on Sunday.

The union is demanding a reversal of the recent increase in electricity tariff and hike in fuel price by the federal government.

But after his meeting with Osinbajo and Mustapha, the Speaker expressed hope that the NLC would shelve its strike due to the “fruitful discussions” they had.

“After my meeting with Labour I met with the VP and SGF. We had fruitful discussions and I am hopeful tomorrow’s strike will be averted,” Gbajabiamila said in a tweet.

The Speaker had proposed the distribution of food items, reduction of taxes on minimum wage and payment of some special allowances, amongst others, as palliatives to cushion the effects of the increases in electricity tariff and fuel price.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, had frowned especially at the hike in electricity tariff despite a valid court judgment stopping the government from implementing it.
